A company developing Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) wanted a solution that could compress a recorded MPEG2 programme, enabling more recording capacity without an increase in hard-disk size.

Prototyping on a PC, we developed an efficient algorithm suitable for implementation on their embedded processor and achieving two levels of additional compression comparable to LP and EP on a standard analogue VCR.
